Big Bluestem, Kaw
Description
Big Bluestem is a tall, long-lived, rhizomatous bunchgrass adapted to a wide range of soils. Big Bluestem is used for pasture, hay, native landscaping, wildlife cover, and stabilization of disturbed areas. Big Bluestem, Kaw is a late-maturing variety recommended for the Great Plains and Midwest. The lower leaves are usually covered with silky hair and curl when dry. Mature plants have a reddish color after frost.
Seeding dates are March-April in the southern Great Plains and April-May in the central and northern Great Plains. Recommended planting depth is a ¼ inch to 1 inch on moderately coarse soils and slightly deeper on sand.
